What's more, to protect the earth, agreeable and solid everybody ought to have a resistance to acknowledge and hear other purpose of perspectives. Ordinarily there comes a moment that individuals trade sees which are unique in relation to other, regardless of whether somebody doesnt appear to concur then the relational abilities instructs us to show resilience and acknowledgment to listen different perspectives. A talented relational individual would favor the subsequent choice and will attempt to bargain the circumstances with resistance. Accepting an off-base significance of message passed on can likewise prompts misconception, feelings of spite and some of the time even to verbal battles. The non-verbal communication and tone of conveying words additionally has an incredible effect. The method of conveying ones message is the primary thing which other notification. In the event that the individual thinks that its great and polite, at that point the great relational relations are developed. The reference through which an individual came to realize somebody likewise has an incredible effect on the individual. That reference consistently characterizes the individual in the light of reference one has referenced. Individual is known by the organization he keeps. I Opened The Door On Portals, Fantasy, And My Disability

I Opened The Door On Portals, Fantasy, And My Disability Once upon a time, I opened a door and instead of finding Narnia, I found my disability. Once upon a time, I had a disability and it opened a door into fantasy. Neither of these statements is completely true, but each holds tendrils of truth, wisps of it to explore and understand something a bit deeper about both my disability and my reading choices. I’ve always been curious about why people gravitate towards the type of reading that they do, how it reflects parts of their personality, or their environment as a child, or the way they acquire books. I learned something that felt like a revelation after reading two mostly unrelated books back to back. Has that ever happened to you, where books seem to magically align in just the right order to create some kind of understanding you didn’t have before? In this case, the two books were The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow and Broken Places Outer Space by Nnedi Okorafor. The Ten Thousand Doors of January is a magical novel where doorways to other worlds are layered upon our own. It’s set in the early 1900s, and January Scaller lives with her adoptive father in a mansion full of unique objects, archaeological finds her adoptive father collects, just as he has collected herâ€"a mixed-race girl, as she is constantly reminded. Her biological father wanders from country to country, hunting these artifacts. When January Scaller finds a door in the midst of fields in a town her adoptive father has dragged her to, she doesn’t see how ill-fitting it is in the landscape. How improbable. How unsafe. What she sees is hope. Possibility. An adventure. She and the door are similar in all these ways. While I loved this novel for its lyricism and whimsy and just general gorgeousness, I would never have made a deeper, more personal connection with it if it weren’t for also reading Broken Places Outer Spaces immediately afterward. In Broken Places, Nnedi Okorafor relates the true story of becoming suddenly disabled in her early college years. What was meant to be a fairly routine surgery instead left her paralyzed, a college athlete with big dreams of running professionally. Writing, at this point, had not occurred to her. As she lay in her hospital bed, she began to hallucinate alien-like bugs. She began thinking about doorways and thresholds as she descended down the “rabbit hole of pain.” When she reemerged, still broken, still disabled, she found herself drawn to science fiction, to the recreation of broken things into something even better, and to stories about her past. It’s the combination of these elements that led to her career as a science fiction author. Disabili ty became a threshold, a portal into another world and the opportunities therein, and an entirely different aspect of herself. Her memoir is saturated with portal metaphors and reading it so soon after The Ten Thousand Doors of January made me think about the portals in my own life. And it especially made me realize that my disability and reading choices were inextricably linked, and how one became a portal for the other, and vice versa. I first passed out in the 4th grade lunch line. My best friend Stephanie caught me. At the time, I didn’t realize what had happened. I thought I’d faked passing out because I was angry with another best friend of mine, Katie, for absolutely no reason. I have no idea why I would think these two things could possibly be connected, but that’s the narrative I told my parents, and I had no more incidents until a couple of years later when I began “falling” a lot while taking showers. At first, I said nothing to my family. But when Mom asked about my bruises, I told her I was clumsy and slipped a lot in the shower, and I believed that. It was chalked up to teenage growth spurts, though in fact, I’m quite short and pretty much stopped growing by sixth or seventh grade. The debilitating headaches I started having were attributed to hormonal migraines, and I was prescribed medicine for them. My frequent illnesses were a repercussion of having allergies. Everything had a reason. At this time, my reading preferences began to change too. As a child, I preferred horror. I loved the delightful tingling feeling of fear, of goosebumps rising on my arms, of breath catching in my throat. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Goosebumps, Fear Street, and everything Stephen King were my top reading choices, though I’ve always read a bit of everything, and I also had Sunfire Romances,  American Girl books, and The Baby-Sitters Club on rotation. I read a little fantasy. The Hobbit and A Wrinkle in Time come to mind, and I enjoyed both. But fantasy wasn’t my bread and butter. That started changing in about 7th grade, and especially by high school. I tried to continue with horror and thumbed through my mom’s books, but nothing resonated. So I turned to my dad’s bookshelves instead, packed with fantasy pocketbooks. Mercedes Lackey became a favorite, as did David Eddings, Robert Jordan, Tamora Pierce, among many, many others. I found myself identifying with the teenage protagonists of these novels, whose onset of magic left them sick for days or weeks, near death until they were finally trained in their magic. And even then, casting a spell had a cost. It left them exhausted, often bedridden. I knew the feeling. I’m quite sure horror works in similar ways for others. In Emily Foster’s compelling essay “The Monster in the Mirror: On Horror, Disability, and Loving Both at Once,” she explains her attraction to horror as a disabled person: “It is so very gratifying, as a person who unsettles, to write unsettling characters and unsettling experiences, to rejoice in our survival when so many narratives kill us off or make us safe and tidy again.” I wish I could’ve seen horror in that way, but instead, I no longer felt the compelling need to be scared. It was an emotion that no longer interested me, and I often felt disgusted after reading one of my mom’s novels. Maybe it was a natural change in personality, and also there was a significant change in my home life at the time that could’ve affected my reading,   but I also think it was connected to the physical effects of my continuing health problems. Instead, fantasy became the portal by which I experienced acceptance and hope as a disabled person, which is similar to January Scaller finding hope and acceptance through fantastical doorways in The Ten Thousand Doors of January, though not as a disabled person, but as a girl and woman who could never fit in and be accepted for who she was because of the color of her skin. For me, fantasy became a portal into reimagining what I would much much later find out is a chronic autonomic disorder (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Disorder, among other things) into something positive. I deeply identified with the protagonists in these fantasy novels. Though they suffered, their experiences of dizziness, exhaustion, headaches, etc. all stemmed from the positive force of magic running through them. I didn’t actually believe I was magical, though of course, I imagined I was. Who doesn’t? Where kids today await their Hogwarts letter, I waited for my white horse, but I knew it would never co me. I was very aware of my reality, but fantasy novels showed me I could still belong.   Unlike Okorafor, I didn’t receive a diagnosis until more than a decade after my health problems began, and actually, they think something else is going on, too. Thankfully, my doctors never questioned my symptoms, which commonly happens with my particular set of health problems (and to women in general). It’s just that my doctors, in a small Tennessee town, had no idea what they were dealing with. Because it took so long to receive a diagnosis, it was very difficult for me to understand what was happening to my body. I never received an immediate moment of epiphany like Okorafor. I never said to myself while reading fantasy, “this is like me. I feel like this too.” Instead, it became a subconscious attraction, though this is conjecture. But it’s a conjecture that makes sense now, especially after reading Broken Places.   I’ve discussed before how reading fantasy made me a feminist. It makes sense then, as feminism is meant to uplift those demeaned by a patriarchal culture, that fantasy would also empower me as a disabled woman. Fantasy still has a long way to go in disability representation, and I hope to someday contribute more diverse perspectives, but it still gave courage to a preteen and teenage Margaret, struggling with something she wouldn’t fully understand for another decade, and still doesn’t fully. Portals can lead us to places where we can be accepted, where we can fit in, where we can be our essential selves. For both Okorafor and I, disabilities became our portals, though for Okorafor they led her to science fiction, and for me fantasy. In another way, fantasy became a portal into understanding my disability as something integral to myself, and not something to be ashamed of. Similarly, January found fantastical doors as a portal into acceptance, into realizing she’s beautiful and perfect exactly the way she is. While these two books are certainly not the only books about portals with similar themes, the congruence of reading them back to back gave me a deeper understanding of myself and my reading. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the Treatment of...

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in the Treatment of Depression Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a method of correcting invalid thought patterns to a more positive view of the person and their place in their world. Some people do not believe that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a real treatment for depression, claiming it is a form of positive thinking (The Daily Mail, 2009). On the opposite end of the spectrum, others argue that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy should be used in all therapies for depression as it allows the patient to take an active role in their treatment. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the benefit of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as a viable treatment of depression, either as a stand-alone therapy or in†¦show more content†¦A â€Å"mental filter† concentrates on bad events by discarding the positive. If the patient goes to a three day conference and everything but one training session goes perfectly, then the entire conference was a failure. Treating positive events as if they do not count is called â€Å"disqualifying the positive†. â€Å"Jumping to conclusions† is a huge factor in self-realization. By assuming the worst without any evidence to show that that is the outcome, jumping to conclusions is exposed. Likewise, paying more attention to negatives while downplaying or ignoring the positive is called â€Å"magnification and manipulation†. â€Å"Emotional reasoning† allows your emotions, not the facts, govern reactions. These last three items have been personal challenges as treatment progressed. Only thinking about how things should be, rather than appreciating and dealing with how things are in the present are known as â€Å"should† statements. If the word â€Å"should† appears in a statement regarding oneself, it is generally a â€Å"should statement†. â€Å"Labeling and mislabeling† causes harsh self-labels to the patient and to those around them. The final common pattern of faulty thinking is personalization. Essay about Jefferson vs. Hamilton on Views of Government

Whose side would you have been on in the 1790s, Thomas Jefferson’s or Alexander Hamilton’s? Both of these men served under George Washington in the first presidential cabinet, yet they had very different views of what government should be (Davis 86). My objective in this research essay is to inform the reader of why there was so much controversy between these two founding fathers, and to determine which side had the better views for our newly forming country. After Washington became president, people started forming political parties based on how they thought the government should be run. Washington did not like the idea of the country being divided into â€Å"factions,† as he called them. But the problem was that this was happening†¦show more content†¦Hamilton was a Federalist who believed in a strong, central government with a national bank. Of course, as history can tell us, Jefferson, an Antifederalist, or a Republican as they called them back then, favored little federal government control and more say for the small farmers and states (Davis 86-7). He believed that all Americans should be educated enough to read and understand the issues that were being voted on so that they could choose their own leaders and run for office themselves. In fact, he proposed a bill, which would guarantee some public education for all children, excluding slaves. He felt that this would allow people to have an opportunity to better themselves based on â€Å"talent and virtue† instead of â€Å"wealth and birth.† Even though his bill was voted on three times, it didn’t pass due to the fact that the majority of the Virginia Assembly thought that it was â€Å"too radical, too expensive, and too unnecessary (Davis 52-3).† Antifederalists were also anti-British, but friendly to France, their ally at the time (Da vis 87). We will write a custom essay sample on Roman Gladiators or any similar topic only for you Order Now The men who did not commit a capital crime were sent to training schools called Ludi. The earliest training schools were in Campania. At these schools they did not teach them to kill people but instead taught them to disable and capture their opponent. Criminals who trained in the schools were allowed to pick their own weapon and defence. If they survived a couple of years without dying they would receive freedom. The gladiators had to do what their owners (Lanista) told them to do otherwise they would be punished either by no food or beaten up. The gladiators were given adequate food supplies eating 3-4 times a day and received medical care. The Roman militaries success in war meant a big haul in of prisoners of war for the use in the gladiatorial games. Men who entered the games by free will had to take an oath in which they had to agree to the consequences of the game. This oath was: Being branded. Being chained. Being killed by an iron weapon. To pay for their food and drink they received with their blood and to suffer things even if they did not wish to. In the morning season of the games the Bestiarii or combatants who were taught to fight against animals were sent into the ring to fend for their lives against animals such as lions, tigers and bulls. Thousands of animals were slaughtered due to this proceeding. After these battles, unlucky men who had committed capital crimes were executed in front of the whole crowd by a sword. The winner of the gladiator battles received a palm branch form the editor. If he was outstanding he may even receive a laurel crown and money but the most sought-after award was the wooden training sword or staff given by the editor. There were many different types of gladiators. The Thracian gladiators were prisoners who were sent to Capua to train for the games in amphitheatres. Their uniform consisted of light leather for the body, little helmet, light shoes and a small round shield. They were trained to run around their opponents this is why they only had light gear. They had great mobility and stamina. Reziarius were equipped with a long net which was used to trip and trap their opponents, a fuscina (trident) which was their offensive weapon. They also had a small dagger which they used to give the final blow. They wore leather for protection and no helmet or shield to deflect their opponents strikes this is why they had to by agile and fit. The Dimacheri had two short swords and only two short leather arm guards to protect themselves. Speed was their speciality, they ran around their opponent and quickly evaded them making the opponent tired before killing him. Sannita were part of the heavy uniform gladiators. They wore a metal plate to protect the chest a long shield, a helmet with a grid to cover the eyes and a long sword to attack. These gladiators were slow but effective within the ring. The Generic gladiators had no particular skill they were used to fill up the space when the event went the whole day or more. Other types of gladiators include the Provocatores, Sesterziarii, Catervrii, Mirmillion, Essedarii, Paegnaria (dwarfs). The weapons of the gladiators consist of fascina(harpoon), galea(visored helmet), galerus(metal shoulder piece), gladius(sword), hasta(lance), iaculum(net), manicae(leather elbow or wrist bands),parma(round shield) ,scutum(large shield) and sica(curved scimitar). Ernest Miller Hemingway Essays - Literature, American Literature

Ernest Miller Hemingway Essays - Literature, American Literature Ernest Miller Hemingway Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois. His father was the owner of a prosperous real estate business. His father, Dr. Hemingway, imparted to Ernest the importance of appearances, especially in public. Dr. Hemingway invented surgical forceps for which he would not accept money. He believed that one should not profit from something important for the good of mankind. Ernest's father, a man of high ideals, was very strict and censored the books he allowed his children to read. He forbad Ernest's sister from studying ballet for it was coeducational, and dancing together led to "hell and damnation". Grace Hall Hemingway, Ernest's mother, considered herself pure and proper. She was a dreamer who was upset at anything which disturbed her perception of the world as beautiful. She hated dirty diapers, upset stomachs, and cleaning house; they were not fit for a lady. She taught her children to always act with decorum. She adored the singing of the birds and the smell of flowers. Her children were expected to behave properly and to please her, always. Mrs. Hemingway treated Ernest, when he was a small boy, as if he were a female baby doll and she dressed him accordingly. This arrangement was alright until Ernest got to the age when he wanted to be a "gun-toting Pawnee Bill". He began, at that time, to pull away from his mother, and never forgave her for his humiliation. The town of Oak Park, where Ernest grew up, was very old fashioned and quite religious. The townspeople forbad the word "virgin" from appearing in school books, and the word "breast" was questioned, though it appeared in the Bible. Ernest loved to fish, canoe and explore the woods. When he couldn't get outside, he escaped to his room and read books. He loved to tell stories to his classmates, often insisting that a friend listen to one of his stories. In spite of his mother's desire, he played on the football team at Oak Park High School. As a student, Ernest was a perfectionist about his grammar and studied English with a fervor. He contributed articles to the weekly school newspaper. It seems that the principal did not approve of Ernest's writings and he complained, often, about the content of Ernest's articles. Ernest was clear about his writing; he wanted people to "see and feel" and he wanted to enjoy himself while writing. Ernest loved having fun. If nothing was happening, mischievous Ernest made something happen. He would sometimes use forbidden words just to create a ruckus. Ernest, though wild and crazy, was a warm, caring individual. He loved the sea, mountains and the stars and hated anyone who he saw as a phoney. During World War I, Ernest, rejected from service because of a bad left eye, was an ambulance driver, in Italy, for the Red Cross. Very much like the hero of A Farewell to Arms, Ernest is shot in his knee and recuperates in a hospital, tended by a caring nurse named Agnes. Like Frederick Henry, in the book, he fell in love with the nurse and was given a medal for his heroism. Ernest returned home after the war, rejected by the nurse with whom he fell in love. He would party late into the night and invite, to his house, people his parents disapproved of. Ernest's mother rejected him and he felt that he had to move from home. He moved in with a friend living in Chicago and he wrote articles for The Toronto Star. In Chicago he met and then married Hadley Richardson. She believed that he should spend all his time in writing, and bought him a typewriter for his birthday. They decided that the best place for a writer to live was Paris, where he could devote himself to his writing. He said, at the time, that the most difficult thing to write about was being a man. They could not live on income from his stories and so Ernest, again, wrote for The Toronto Star. Ernest took Hadley to Italy to show her where he had been during the war. He was devastated, everything had changed, everything was destroyed. Hadley

Personal and Professional Footprint Essay

Personal and Professional Footprint Essay Personal and Professional Footprint Essay One question that troubles the world’s environment-sensitive populace is what is their ecological footprint is having on the environment. Awareness on how much the world’s population impacts on the environment remains minimal as over the years, humans have opted for processes that strain the planet’s resources. This has had tremendous negative implications to the environment. Pollution, depletion of fundamental natural resources and diminishing plant and animal biodiversity are all becoming more and more evident (Collins, et al, 2008). Consequently, I have come to question myself of how my presence especially as an ecological being impact on the environment. Two aspects of my life reveal a lot on my contribution towards an unsustainable environment. These aspects include consumption and profession. Consumption is significantly pertinent to my ecological footprint as this is evident in my daily routines. The extent that I consume earth’s resources as an individual largely affects the environment around me. Most of my daily endeavors have a negative impact on the planet. For instance, I happen to purchase groceries which are packaged in plastic bags so often that I imagined what would happen if everyone packaged their groceries in paper bags as opposed to plastic bags. Ideally, the number of trees cut down would significantly reduce and this would in turn contribute towards sustaining the planet’s resources. Moreover, waste materials from of plastic bags are harmful to the environment on so many levels. Taking in to account the immense number of plastic bags used on a daily basis, a significant amount of waste from these plastic bags is created. The reality is this waste is usually disposed off in ways that harm the environment. My personal association with the environment is proof enough that human involvement towards global warming is certain. Global warming, a major concern in the modern world, is primarily induced my individual actions as much as it is stimulated by large scale parties such as factories and other production entities. For instance, being a woman, normal morning habits entail use of hairsprays, spraying of deodorants among other aerosols. Further, use of shaving cream and application of many other cleaning agents is common with many people. These habits have become not just part of my daily schedule but also part of many other peoples’ daily routine. These household products that are used on a daily basis were thought to be environmentally friendly in the 1930s as they were considered non-toxic therefore safe to the environment. On the contrary, recent studies conducted after the 1970s indicate that everyday actions entailing use of these items significantly affect the environment ( Morris Parry, 2011). For starters, aerosols have the potential of causing damage to the atmosphere. Atmospheric concentration caused by release of various gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and halocarbons act as trapping agents of thermal energy resulting to a green house effect. Green house effect causes global warming and over the past few decades, human activities that entail release of the mentioned gases have been drastically increasing (Collins, et al, 2008). On a personal note, I would imagine the extent of damage I have caused to the earth’s surface as unimaginable leave alone that caused by many other people whose morning routines are somewhat similar across the globe. Despite the many changes that have been made on the contents of everyday products such as aerosols and hairsprays, going by my ecological understanding, my application of such items considerably result to extensive damage to the environment. Professionally, as an environmental woman, I can deductively acknowledge that human-induced global warming is a reality. Most human activities are backed by a section of wealthy individuals are interested in processes that translate to profits rather than safeguarding the environment (Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, 2004). This group of people has managed to convince more and more people into believing that human activities are not attributable to environmental degradation. On the contrary, human have always influenced the climate and the environment. An example is illustrated in my profession as a social worker. My company deals with production of numerous print documents such as brochures as well as electronic messages which become obsolete within a short time. Additionally, most electronic devices such as computers and mobile phones used by the company workers are left on at most times even when not in use therefore leading to mass wastage of limited resources. On average, the amount of paper and electricity wasted by our firm only can overtime put a significant amount of strain on the few forests and inadequate water resources available. Essentially, my professional background and my consumption behavior somewhat inter-relate. Both largely influence the ecological footprint I have on the planet. Th anks to my profession, I am more aware of the hazardous nature of human consumption behaviors and its impact on the environment. As an ecological human, I am therefore capable of transitioning my behaviors to a more ecologically aware standing. For instance, I can now see the importance of using paper bags in place of plastic bags. Additionally, I can now understand why it is important to use environmentally friendly personal effects as even use of aerosols and the like at a personal level also impacts on earth’s planet. Moreover, I am more informed on which processes within the firm I work for can be changed to avoid wastage of resources while at the same time, save the company on costs that should not be incurred. A significant role of sustaining both the climate and the ecosystem going into the future is played by humans. My profession as an environmentalist has predominantly helped sustain the planet. For example, I am more aware of the effects of human activities on the environment. I am no longer in denial that earth’s climate as well as environment is downgraded by human activities. Consequently, I have transitioned to become more susceptible towards the environment. In addition, I am a strong proponent of the war against adverse economic implications on the planet’s resources so as to leave a mark in the fight towards sustaining the planet’s environment. Human induced environmental degradation is evident and awareness of human implications on the environment is non-reassuring. Many people still remain skeptic on human involvement towards environmental deprivation. A lot of awareness needs to be performed so as to sensitize more people about the issue. According to a study by George Mason University (2009), the media more specifically television, plays a minimal role in increasing environmental awareness. According to the report, television was found to be the least media platform that impacted on viewers’ knowledge concerning the issue of global warming and environmental dilapidation. Surprisingly, less common media platforms such as the print media and the internet were found to be more influential as compared to television in informing people of the true impact of carbon emissions to the atmosphere and its implications on global warming (Concordia University, 2009). Most people who do not have first-hand understanding of glo bal warming learn of the hazards of human activities through the internet and newspapers. Public interest in this sphere of influence is merely influenced by watching television. This reality is shocking as one would expect watching television to have more impact on sensitizing people about the effects of human activities on the environment. On a daily basis, millions of people watch television. Therefore, it would be more sensible if these numbers of viewers gained some form of concern of the environment. If people would become sensitized about human involvement in environmental degradation through television and subsequently get enlightened on ways of reducing their contribution in the issue, tremendous steps towards sustaining the planet would be made. In my opinion, televisions can be used to increase peoples’ perceived knowledge of environmental degradation. This could be achieved through ensuring contents displayed on this platform positively highlight the situation on the ground. For example, in addition to serving as an entertainment tool, television sets can be used to perform educational functions. Reforms should be made to increase the effectiveness of this unexploited source of information as this would increase awareness which would in turn convince populations across the world to become ecological. Undoubtedly, efforts towards sustaining the environment can only be feasible when many people come together and work towards ensuring the planet is conserved. Through awareness, strategies that aim towards sustaining the environment can be implemented with more ease. Feel free to buy an essay on this popular topic at writing service. Negligence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Negligence - Essay Example In the context of negligence, tort law is more concerned with the harm that results from careless behaviour rather than harm caused intentionally. It follows, then, that negligence is the failure to apply the reasonable care as a prudent person would have done in similar circumstances. The key principle of the tort law of negligence is that people must exercise rational care when acting by considering the potential and foreseeable harm they can cause to others, Fletcher vs Rylands, LR 1 Ex 265 of 1866 (Donal 2004, p.5). So, when a court establishes that there was negligence, it is actually conducting an ex post assessment of the defendant’s conduct. Historically, suits of negligence have been analysed in stages known as elements. The significance of elements is that a plaintiff must prove all elements relevant to his claim. For example, if there are five elements in a particular tort, failure to prove all five will lead to failure of the claim. Despite all this, it is also cru cial to note that persons who disregard the safety aspect of others but cause no injury may only be reprehensible morally, but will not be guilty of negligence. On the other hand, those who make all effort to exercise care but still fall below the stipulated standards by the court will be guilty of negligence and held liable (Feinnman 2010, p. 69). The legal duty of care a defendant owes a plaintiff defines the relationships and circumstances recognised by law as giving rise to legal obligation to take care. A person may be owed a care of duty by another to ensure that unreasonable economical, mental or physical loss or harm is not suffered. According to the House of Lords, duty of care can be tested in three parts in judicial terms. First, the defendant’s conduct must have caused harm that was reasonably foreseeable; then, there must have been a proximity relationship between the plaintiff and

Critical analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 3

Critical analysis - Essay Example h her implications that our generation today is self-absorbed, less committed than the previous generation whose capacity for love has shrink and withered as we wait for the perfect one to come along (196). For many generations, women have been forced by society to conform to sets of norms. Even in this present generation, many people still believe that women need to get married and have children to be complete. As Crittenden kindly put it "A woman will not understand what true dependency is until she is cradling her own infant in her arms; nor will she lively achieve the self-confidence she craves until she has withstood, and transcended, the weight of responsibility a family places upon her – a weight that makes all the paperwork and assignments of her in-basket seen feather-light (976)." Yes, motherhood is a big responsibility and caring for a family is something that should never be taken lightly by any woman or even by a man for than matter but the point is, womanhood is not just about making babies and caring for the family. Such idea is too simplistic. Its like putting a woman inside a box and limiting her potentials and capacities. The sense of wisdom and maturity does n ot only come when woman gets married and have children of her own. The author may not be aware of it but a lot of women and men for that matter get married, have children but never really grow up both emotionally and mentally. Growing up should never be tied to the idea of marriage and having children. We are not cows that are grown so that they can breed when they reach maturity. We are human beings and we a have a choice when it comes to these things. Another thing that the author failed to mention here is that marriage is not a means to and end. You do not get married to grow up, to be become more responsible, to be "stronger" or to be happy as the author would like to believe. Besides, a lot of people who are married are not happy at all. Just look at the staggering divorce rate that

Free Essays: Nature in Dickinson’s Poetry :: Biography Biographies Essays

Nature in Dickinson’s Poetry The Imagery of Emily Dickinson, by Ruth Flanders McNaughton, in a chapter entitled "Imagery of Nature," examines the way the Emily Dickinson portrays nature in her poetry. Dickinson often identified nature with heaven or God (33), which could have been the result of her unique relationship with God and the universe. There are a lot of religious images and allusions used in her poetry, such as the rainbow as the sign of the covenant God made with Noah. Dickinson always held nature in reverence throughout her poetry, because she regarded nature as almost religious. There was almost always a mystical or religious undercurrent to her poetry, but she depicted the scenes from an artistic point of view rather than from a religious one (34). One of the most obvious things that Dickinson did in her poetry was paying minute attention to things nobody else noticed. She was obsessed with the minute detail of nature—paying attention to things such as hills, flies, bumble bees, and eclipses. In these details, Dickinson found "manifestations of the universal" and felt the harmony that bound everything together (33). The small details and particulars that caught her eye were like "small dramas of existence" (39). Each poem was like a tiny micro-chasm that testified to Dickinson’s life as a recluse. Dickinson’s created "dramas" were not static, but everything from the images she used to the words she chose for impact contributed to a "moving picture" (39). In the following poem, Dickinson writes how nature acts as a housewife sweeping through a sunset: She sweeps with many-colored brooms, And leaves the shreds behind; Oh, housewife in the evening west, Come back, and dust the pond! You dropped a purple ravelling in, You dropped an amber thread; And now you’ve littered all the East With duds of emerald! And still she plies her spotted brooms, And still the aprons fly, Till brooms fade softly into stars— And then I come away. Dickinson artistically shows the "sunset in terms of house cleaning" (36). The themes of domestic life and housewifery are displayed in the preceding poem. Only somebody with the observational powers and original creativity like Emily Dickinson could see something so unique and refreshing in a sunset.

IPO of Hertz Essay

1. Why are the private equity sponsors pursuing an IPO of Hertz at this time – that is, what is the purpose of the IPO? The sponsors wanted cash in order fund another special dividend. They felt that even though they had only owned the company for short time, they were in the perfect position to sell it. There are several reasons why 2006 was an opportune time for the IPO of Hertz. The market was on the rise with the S&P up over 10% on the year. The IPO market itself was incredibly strong, outperforming 2005 by November. As the case states â€Å"198 IPOs had price raisings approximately $41 billion. The pricing of IPOS also seemed solid. Of the 198 deals, the average first-day return (not annualized) was 8.8%. After four weeks, nearly 60% were trading above their offer prices†. Hertz was also recognized as one the top car rental brands in the world, it’s branding was dominant throughout North America, which in turn, gave it premium pricing power. At the time, Her tz also had the opportunity to expand in both the non-airport and equipment rental markets, which also has higher margins than general car rentals. 2. What are the differences between conventional IPOs and IPOs that arise from leveraged buyouts? First of all, it appears that private equity-led IPOs (RLBOs) are more successful than their non-buyout-backed counter parts. According to the case â€Å"a study which examined nearly 500 private equity-led IPOs from 1980 to 2002. For example, relative to $1 invested in the S&P, investors in RLBOs earned $1.05 on average over 36 months following the IPO compared to $0.81 in non-buyout-backed IPOs.† Sponsors also take it upon themselves to use debt in order to issue a special dividend and pay themselves for their work. This action typically raises concerns whether the sponsors are invested in the company over the long term. However, private equity firms claim that one of their advantages is their long-term perspective, a study by Moody’s involving 222 buyouts determined that this was not the case and that Special dividends resulted in a credit downgrade almost half of the ti me. 3. Should the sponsors have taken on additional debt and paid themselves a dividend from Hertz? No, the sponsors should not have taken on additional debt and paid themselves a dividend from Hertz. This pre-IPO action implemented by the sponsors shed negative light on themselves and the company as a whole. It portrayed entitlements of greed while hurting Hertz well established market reputation, it discouraged investors from potentially investing in the company, as well as throwing a  negative persona over the future outlook for Hertz. The dividend payment also caused a media uproar with more negative externalities being portrayed against the sponsors, as they were seen as money hungry investors with no true intention of expanding the value of Hertz. They were viewed as just wanting to receive their money and exit the company. Their actions were seen as selfish by the public and their peers, which was reflective by the demand for Hertz shares decreasing, along with the range of the IPO value falling from a stronger near $18 dollar range to a substantial decrease at around $15. The dividend payment provided doubt on the sponsors in how it was seemingly impossible to achieve value creation as well as significant management improvements in such a short time period, overall hurting the value of the company. 4. What are the pros and cons of public shareholders should consider when investing in sponsor-backed IPOs? This question boils down to the differences between investing in a sponsor backed IPO and investing in a non-sponsor backed IPO. During the time of this deal, the Great Recession was nearing its start, so the market took a big hit with that being said. Both sponsor and non-sponsor backed IPOs underwent price declines in their share-price valuation during this time, which should be viewed as a negative when considering investing in sponsor backed IPOs. To build on that with something that can be viewed as a positive, is that sponsor backed IPOs fell at a lesser rate than non-sponsor backed IPOs, decreasing at roughly 9% and 12% respectively. Another positive of sponsor backed IPOs is that they tend to generate greater post IPO price appreciation than that of non-sponsor backed IPOs. All in all, PE sponsors, â€Å"create value from being able to invest and operate with a longer-term perspective than public companies.† This long term perspective leads sponsors to make tougher decisions in terms of operations and debt, as well as being able to, â€Å"hold managers more accountable for higher levels of performance than public companies.† The quick exit tactic often used by PE sponsors does however bring to debate whether these sponsors are, â€Å"in it for the long haul or only for themselves.† 5. At the $15 offer price, does the Hertz IPO represent a good investment opportunity for Berg? Would you invest in the Hertz IPO? After conducting our analysis of the value of Hertz, we believe that offer price of $15 is still too low. We believe the share price to be about $12.69. Therefore, Hertz would not be a good  investment opportunity for Berg and I personally would not invest in the company either. 6. The sponsors invested $2.3 billion in equity (divided equally among them) to finance the $15 billion buyout of Hertz in December 2005. If the Hertz IPO is completed at the $15 offer price and the overallotment option (Greenshoe) is exercised, what is your estimate of the gross returns to the sponsors will earn on their $2.3 billion investment in Hertz (i.e. ignoring carried interest or management fees on the funds)?

Aging Begins As A Young Adult - 1970 Words

FALL RISK 2 The Process of aging begins as a young adult. A new life is so tender, fragile, helpless, and in need of care from others. Toddlers are wobbly as they take their first steps and learn to run, falling and bumping their little round heads and chubby knees. Toward the end of life no matter how healthy, strong, or willing they are, older adult begin slowing down which puts them at a risk for falling. Their metabolism is much slower than it once was, they have less energy and endurance which results in decreased muscle tone due to the lack of use, and osteoporosis sets in leaving them vulnerable to fractures. The geriatric population is considered at†¦show more content†¦The natural aging process is only partially responsible for falls in the elderly population. Several factors put an older person at a risk for falls which include: certain medications and polypharmacy, mental illness, certain disease s such as Alzheimer’s and dementia, drug abuse, vision changes, incontinence, impulsive behavior, vertigo, and clutter in a room causing patient to stumble. According to the Stubbs (2011) , the most crucial piece of a patient’s history to predict a fall is if the patient has fallen before. The Center For Disease Control (2011) states that â€Å"every 17 seconds an older adult will require emergency medical treatment for a fall related injury and that even more concerning, in the next 30 minutes an older adult will die from injuries sustained from the fall†. The trained healthcare staff, especially the nurse, has a significant role and responsibility in identifying and taking all necessary measures to help each patient avoid falling. Understanding that different elderly patients fall for different reasons is crucial in preventing falls in patients. Hill Fauerbach (2014) describe three types of falls that occur in a health care facility: Anticipated Falls are at tributed to know physiological conditions and are most common, 78% of patient falls.
